iOS and Root CA

Recently, I created my root CA for my private service, e.g. my fritz box or home automation server. Adding the certificate to an iPhone or iPad is a bit more complicated because it requires two (2) places to add/activate the certificate. So let’s start.

I put my certificate into my iCloud and opened it from there. The device asked me to add the profile.

But this does not change the device unless you install the so-called profile -whatever this means. You must go to „Settings“ and install the root CA „profile“.

But after this, the CA is still not activated and the browser still complains about a missing certificate chain or signing authority. So let’s activate the certificate itself. So navigate to „Settings->General->About“ and open „Certificate Trust Settings“ at the very bottom.

After enabling (trusting) the CA, the browsers (Chrome, Safari, …) accept the certificate and your connection is secure and trusted.
